MIAMI (BNO NEWS) — Igor weakened to a tropical depression over the Atlantic, forecasters said on Thursday, but it is expected to regain tropical storm status in the next hours.

As of 5 p.m. EDT (2100 GMT), the center of Igor was located about 255 kilometers (155 miles) south of the Cape Verde Islands, said the Miami-based National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The storm, the ninth tropical storm of the 2010 Atlantic Hurricane Season, was moving toward the northwest near 20 kilometers (13 miles). “A turn toward the west-northwest with an increase in forward speed is expected during the next day or two.”

Maximum sustained winds are near 55 kilometers (35 miles) per hour, with higher gusts, but the storm is expected to regain tropical storm status. “Some strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours,” the NHC added.

Igor is expected to reach hurricane status by Sunday.
