Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein(HVP)Maybe Largest Food Recall Ever

Mar 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The FDA had released a new food recall, that could very possibly turn into the largest food recall in North America, authorities say. The list of foods in this recall was 153 on the FDA website as of March 11, and it is likely to increase as more information comes in. The main ingredient causing the recall is Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein, and is present in an alarming amount of the foods we eat everyday.
The FDA website will continue to update the list as it becomes necessary. Readers are encouraged to check back at the FDA site often to be sure the foods that they are eating are safe.
The recall was caused by salmonella contamination of the HVP that was used to flavor many different foods by manufacturers such as “Basic Food Flavors.” The Nevada based company starts out with soy extracts or vegetable scraps. This is boiled in hydrochloric acid, then neutralized with sodium hydroxide. The acid will then break the proteins down into amino acids. One of these amino acids, called glutamate, is the one that enhances flavor. It is these proteins that are contaminated, and since they are present in so many different foods, the recall may become huge.
A complete PDF of the recalled foods that have been named so far is available for download on the FDA website listed above. Some of the listed foods are:
