Reykjavik, Mar 22 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Hundreds of people were evacuated in Southern Iceland, after a volcano erupted there. The volcano spewed ash and molten lava into the air, so the evacuation of the inhabitants became all the more crucial. Reports said that around 600 people have been evacuated from the nearby regions. Since the volcano erupted near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier, so there are chances that the nearby regions would be flooded too.
“This was a rather small and peaceful eruption, but we are concerned that it could trigger an eruption at the nearby Katla volcano, a vicious volcano that could cause both local and global damage,” said Pall Einarsson, who is a geophysicist at the University of Iceland’s Institute of Earth Science.
The volcano near the Eyjafjallajokull glacier has basically been dormant since long, as it last erupted in 1821. The Eyjafjallajokull glacier is located just 100 miles to the east of the capital of Iceland. Scientists said that the crack from which the lava was spewing is around 1640 to 3281 feet in diameter. The scientists are worried that if the size of the crack increases, then it could trigger off dangerous floods in the area, as the volcano is located very near to a huge glacier.
