Jakarta, July 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Explorers on a deep-sea exploration have discovered an incredible volcano under the sea. The scientists who discovered the volcano reported that the volcano rises to levels of 3,000 meters from the seabed. However the eruption is unnoticeable from the shore of the sea.

The group of scientists that includes Americans and Indonesians discovered the rare phenomenon using high-resolution cameras that were attached to powerful sonar robots. The discovery was made off the Island of Sulawesi. Scientists say they were exploring the sea to learn about the marine ecosystems.

So far, the scientists have mapped about 6,200 sq. kilometers of sea floor, since they began the exploration in June.

The scientists say they believe that the video will help in future exploration of the sea. They claimed that knowing the undersea features would help the scientists to best protect the sea and the organisms that live in it.

The expedition, which will conclude on August 14 is expected to contribute to protecting the ecosystems and help protect the fisheries that live in them.

“This is a huge undersea volcano taller than all but three or four mountains in Indonesia. The more we understand these undersea features and the communities of life they support, the better we can manage and protect the ocean and its resources,” according to Jim Holden, who is a microbiologist at the University of Massachusetts in Amherst.
