How To Choose Safe Toys for Your Kids
October 5th, 2010 - 12:33 am ICT by Angela Kaye MasonOct 4 (THAINDIAN NEWS) With the millions of toys which are on the market today, and the hundreds more which make it to the stores every year, it can be difficult to choose the ones which are safe, and will not pose a risk to the well being of your children.
Every year, many kids are treated at hospitals for toy-related injuries, especially choking. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has standards which all toys made in the US or brought in after 1995 must comply to.
According to ‘kidshealth.org’ few general guidelines which you can follow are:
1. Toys made of fabric should be labeled as flame resistant or flame retardant.
2. Stuffed toys should be washable.
3. Painted toys should be covered with lead-free paint.
4. Art materials should say nontoxic.
5. Crayons and paints should say ASTM D-4236 on the package, which means that they’ve been evaluated by the American Society for Testing and Materials.
It is also suggested that you stay away from second hand, hand me down, and used toys.
