New York, Nov 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Honda’s Accord got the highest possible safety rating for 2011 auto models. The car’s ratings edged out that of Toyota and Hyundai. The ratings were as a result of the evaluation of the car under the new evaluation standards in the United States.

Accord is the top selling US model of Honda. The car got the maximum five star rating and the details were presented on the website of the United States’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The NHTSA used three crash categories for the ratings. With some 40 models tested by the NHTSA using the three categories, six of the cars rated five stars. However the Honda Accord was the first model to get five star rating in all the three categories.

The changes in the testing of the crash worthiness of the models included the use of female dummies. Female dummies were used and the extent of damage to the chest, head, neck and leg were all examined. Previously it was only male dummies that were used for the crash tests.

Other models like the Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry were all rated five star during the test. They were tested on side and frontal crashes as well as rollovers.
