November 7, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): Just when we thought that the atrocities committed by the Nazis and Hitler were all accounted for, the world was shocked to discover a mass grave of Holocaust victims. The mass grave was unearthed in Romania on Friday and it is being speculated that over 100 men, women, and children, were killed by Romanian troops and then buried in the mass grave hidden in Romanian Forest. The forest is situated 220 kilometers away from the town of Popricorni at the northeast side of Bucharest. Scientists believe that the people in the mass grave were killed by Romanian troops in 1941.
All of the casualties in the mass murder were Jews according to forensic experts as the Elie Wiesel National Institute for the Study of the Holocaust in Romania revealed recently. Until now, the world thought that Hitler and the Nazis were the only ones responsible for the Holocaust but right now it appears that more than 280,000 Jews were killed during the regime of Dictator Marshal Ion Antonescu. Right now the population of Jews in Romania stands at a meager 6,000, which is a mere shadow of their previous numbers.
Historians suggest that there were several Pogroms in Romania performed by both Romanian and German soldiers that persecuted and mass-murdered the Jews living in the country. Romania’s role in the Holocaust remains a topic of highly charged debates till date. Unearthing of this mass grave will make matters worse for the Jews living in the country as they might start questioning the role of their own country in Holocaust. For now, the riot police has sealed off the area and forensic experts are trying to find out the perpetrators of this heinous crime.
