HMS Ambush: Biggest ever nuclear submarine in the UK Navy
December 15th, 2010 - 12:16 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Dec 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The United Kingdom Navy has announced that it is set to launch its biggest nuclear submarine ever.
The submarine is dubbed HMS Ambush. It is a massive 291 foot long and is more than 12 storeys high. The massive structure also has a very big nuclear reactor that is capable of powering a whole town.
The ship will house about 98 crewmen and it has the ability to fire at an enemy at more than 1,600km away. It does not require a refuel and it can go around the world without coming up out of the deep water. With its state of the art sonar and radar system, the HMS Ambush is capable of detecting enemy ships more than 3,000 nautical miles away.
The submarine, which costed 1.2 billion pounds to make is more complex than space shuttles when it comes to design. It is capable of making oxygen and fresh water from the sea water. That means in times on crisis, the crew members can survive pretty long. The submarine’s massive nuclear powered engines can propel the vessel to a speed of more than 500 miles each day. That is a top speed under water.
The submarine will be launched on Thursday at the Barrow-in-Furness in Cumbria.
