Lakshmi is the Hindi goddess of wealth, beauty and good fortune. During the Australian Fashion Week, designer Lisa Blue lined up models in bikinis and swimwear with the image of Lakshmi. The gesture was infuriated some Hindu followers including the Indian government.
The Indian government registered its protest with the Australian consulate in New Delhi. Some Indians took to the street to also register their protest in the defilement of the Hindi holy symbol. Some of the protesters burned the flag of Australia on some streets.
The protests have caused Lisa Blue to convey its apology. The fashion design company has withdrawn the product from the market. The company promised that they will not go ahead with the sale of the swimsuits and they have also stopped the production of the product.
The Indian Commerce Minister Anand Sharma praised Lisa Blue for withdrawing the products. Sharma said that, “The concerned company was rightly advised and has withdrawn the line and that issue is settled because by doing so, sensitivity on this matter and the religious sentiments have been respected.”
