Port-au-Prince, Jan 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) As Haiti lies in ruins due to the 7.0 earthquake that struck and devastated the region, help and all types of aid is pouring in, from all over the world. US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton promised that her country would also provide assistance to Haitians. “The United States is offering our full assistance to Haiti and to others in the region. We will be providing both civilian and military disaster relief and humanitarian assistance and our prayers are with the people who have suffered, their families and their loved ones.” Even the US President Barack Obama endorsed her stand.
UK Firefighters have volunteered to go to Haiti to search for the earthquake survivors there. The team is composed of around 61 firefighters, lead by Greater Manchester firefighter Peter Stevenson. The firefighters have volunteered for the operation and they are also taking some specialist equipment and 2 search dogs as well who will aid in the rescue mission.
Even the United Nations is trying to ascertain the damage and the havoc caused by the earthquake so that they can send adequate aid into the region. But there are some communication problems, which are delaying the efforts. “We are trying to get in touch with our people on the ground but we are experiencing communication problems, which is not unusual in a disaster such as this,” said United Nations spokeswoman Stephanie Bunker to Agence France-Presse.
The Haitian ambassador to the US, Raymond Joseph is pleading for aid and has asked all the other countries to come forward and support Haiti in the country’s darkest hour.
