Memphis, May 2, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Heavy storm and rain lashed over Tennessee on Saturday leading to the death of at least 5 people and making thousands of people homeless. The rain has flooded most of the part of Tennessee and according to reports the flood water has not only engulfed the roads and highways but also homes in the Nashville area along with its surrounding places. The forecast is not relieving either. The National Weather Service has said that the rain will continue to pour down through this weekend. It has also added that out of the 75 counties of Arkansas, 33 have been issued a tornado warning and in Tennessee 25 counties are threatened by a tornado lash.
Jeremy Heidt, a spokesman of the Tennessee Emergency Management on Saturday said that death of the five people on Saturday is related to the storm and rain. A media source reported that two people were swept away by the flood water while they were trying to save themselves by mounting over the roof of their SUV. This incident happened 80 miles Northwest of Nashville. Jeremy Heidt revealed to media sources that three more people died in counties near Nashville.
The most badly affected part of Tennessee is the southwestern part. Several streets and highways in Memphis have been declared impassable. Memphis had received 10 inches of rain on Saturday morning and the Met officials have warned that it can receive another 4 to 8 inches of rainfall overnight. Hundreds of people have been evacuated from the flooded areas of the state and swift water rescue teams were called for speedy operation, according to Jeremy Heidt.
