Heavy rain and gales spark floods in SW England
November 18th, 2010 - 2:26 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattLondon, Nov 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Southwestern England has been flooded following heavy rains on Wednesday. The floods which also sparked landslides disrupted travel in the area on Wednesday. Police have taken control of the place and they say they are dealing with the floods.
Several people in the affected area have been trapped in their cars and homes. The police have described the floods as a “major incident” in the country. The floods have left parts of St. Austell and St. Blazey impassable in the country. Some victims of the flood recalled their experiences to the press.
Barry Green who owns a bakery in Lostwithiel said that, “One minute I was making bread, the next I was wading waist high through muddy water. We’ve had people coming in to help but it’s pretty much destroyed the shop”. The police have moved in to rescue those that have been trapped by the floods.
No casualties have been reported and police say they two search-and-rescue helicopters have been sent to the affected areas. In some places, water levels as high as 1.5 meters have been reported. The rail services to Cornwall have all been suspended due to the floods.
The last time Cornwall was flooded was in 2004 when a flash flood destroyed several properties.
