Honolulu, Feb 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Hawaii became the latest favorite state of gay and lesbian activists when the state’s legislature approved a bill that approves same sex unions.

Same sex activists have been fighting for years to get the bill passed. They have organized several rallies and other things to get more support for the bill.

The bill is a done deal because the state’s Democratic governor, Neil Abercrombie issued a statement later in the day after the bill was passed on Wednesday. The statement from the office of the governor said that the he will be appending his signature to the bill within just ten days.

The bill which was presented to the state’s Senate last week ended 18-5 in favor of its approval. Some same sex couples who witnessed the voting go on couldn’t hide their joy when the results of the vote were announced. Some of the people gathered outside the Senate hugged and cried after achieving another milestone in their quest to have the same rights as other members of the citizenry.

One such advocate and her partner couldn’t hide their joy when they said that, “I’m overjoyed. I’m so relieved. I’m so happy. We’re really representing aloha and the aloha spirit with this vote. I’m thrilled.”

That means same sex unions could begin on the first day of 2012.
