itemWashington, Mar 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture has received a great opening gift from Charles L. Blockson, the noted historian. The museum, which is situated near the Washington Monument, and is slated to be opened for the public sometime in the year 2015, has been given by the historian a huge collection of the things that were once owned by the one of the most famous abolitionists of all time, Harriet Tubman. The gift is fitting for the museum that aims at recognizing the history of African American culture, for few characters in history have done more for the emancipation of the blacks than Harriet Tubman.

Moreover, the items that have been donated to the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture are the only ones of Harriet Tubman’s personal use that have survived. Outside of her residence, that is, as per the reports provided by the director of the museum, Lonnie Bunch. The artifacts consist of items of personal use of the noted abolitionist. The list includes a silk shawl that Harriet Tubman was gifted by the extant queen, Queen Victoria. Apart from this, there are also dinner utensils, and one item that has gained historical importance, a hymnal.

Perhaps the most important of all these are the letters of correspondence, and a collection of photographs. These items are important as they give an insight into the personal life of the woman who was born to a slave, and was later instrumental in bringing about the freedom of hundreds of blacks. The entire collection amounts to 39 items in all.
