International Talk Like a Pirate Day (ITLAPD) is a parodic holiday created in 1995 by John Baur and Mark Summers, of Albany, Oregon, who proclaimed September 19 each year as the day when everyone in the world should talk like a pirate.
It started off as a joke, but gained prominence when humor columnist Dave Berry promoted it on his column. Since, then there has been no looking back. All over the world it is celebrated in all its flavors with Treasure hunt, screening of Pirate Movies, Pirate themed Parties, pirate cruises etc.
Even Google has a special Search Engine on this theme at http://www.google.com/webhp?hl=xx-pirate Facebook has an option to convert the text to pirate English.
As, the popular Pirate saying goes ‘To Err is human, but to Arrr is Pirate’, it shows that it’s a fun-filled offbeat day, hence the popularity. The pirate movies, like the ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ made a killing at the box-office. Along with that, it is also a multi-billion dollar Walt Disney franchise having a pirate-theme park ride, a series of films and novels as well as many video games and other publications.
