Haiti Death Toll Ticking Up Every Moment

haiti-death-tollHaiti, Jan 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The earthquake in Haiti, has claimed the lives of thousands of people and the death toll is ticking up every moment. As per the official reports, 50,000 bodies have already been collected. Paul Antoine Bien-Aime, the Interior Minister, in a media report said that the death toll might reach 200,000. The rescue teams of different organizations have started to bury the dead bodies and help the survivors.

According to the reports, government workers were put to work for removing the dead bodies and putting them in graves. They have already buried thousands of people in mass graves in Haiti’s capital and their work is still in progress. The earthquake of Tuesday had destroyed some of the major establishment of the region, including the head quarters of the United Nations. It has been reported that Hillary Rodham Clinton, US State Secretary and Ban Ki-moon, the Secretary General of the United Nations have decided to visit Haiti to get first-hand idea of the damages that the region has survived.

It has been reported that the officials of United Nations in Port-au-Prince have confirmed the death of 13 staff members of the United Nations. They have also confirmed the death of 4 international police officers and 19 peacekeepers of the United Nations. The reports also indicate that around one hundred workers of the United Nations got trapped under the rubble of the United Nations headquarters. Apart from them, fifty staffs of the United Nations were also missing after the quake and could be trapped somewhere. Several buildings have been damaged in the quake and the exact death toll would be revealed only after the rubble is cleared.
