Gunman at Kansas hospital surrenders in exchange for cigarettes

- TOPEKA, Kansas (BNO NEWS) — An unknown gunman stormed a Topeka, Kansas hospital on Sunday afternoon but quickly surrendered, according to officials and local media reports.
Emergency services responded to Colmery-O’Neil VA Medical Center after the incident began, including a SWAT team and multiple hostage negotiators. A police officer told BNO News that a gunman entered the building but said it was unclear if it was a hostage situation or a gunman barricaded inside.
According to the Topeka Capital-Journal, the gunman surrendered in exchange for cigarettes at around 1.45 p.m. local time. It is unknown if anyone was ever taken hostage.
Former Topeka City Councilwoman Lana Kennedy told the newspaper that her husband, Bob Kennedy, was among those unable to leave the building because of the situation.
No shots were fired and no one was reported injured.
