Louisiana, July 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Residents of the US Gulf are left with having to choose between feeding their families or their pets. Mostly it is the pets, which are at the losing end.

The coast have been devastated by an oilrig accident that led to the worst environmental disaster in the US history.

The Louisiana Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals said most families have surrendered their pets to the center since the spill began in April. The center says that in May, about 288 pets were surrendered to the center compared to only 60 the same period last year. That figure represents about 500% rise in the number of people who can no longer take care of their beloved pets.

The residents at the US Gulf Coasts have been hit hard by the BP oil spill that resulted from the April 20 rig accident that claimed the lives of 11 rig workers. The company has spent more than $3.5 billion so far and the leak was just recently stopped thanks to a better cap that the company used to block the ruptured pipe.

Though residents say they are relieved the spill has been stopped, they fear it might only be temporarily as the pressure in the oil pipes continue to increase.

B.P. announced last month that they have setup a $20 billion compensation fund for the families that were most hit by the disaster.
