Virginia, Sep 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The scheduled execution of a 41-year-old “borderline mentally sick” woman is creating a controversy in the United States. The woman in question is Teresa Lewis and she is set to be executed by lethal injection on September 23 2010.

The State of Virginia is planning to execute it first female prisoner in 98 years. The woman is accused of masterminding the death of her husband and her stepson in their trailer in 2002, because she wanted to claim his life insurance of $250,000.

The woman along with the two other accomplices that she hired to kill her husband have been found guilty of the charge and subsequently arrested. The two hired men, including one Teresa is allegedly having an affair with have been sentenced to life imprisonment. Teresa has however been sentenced to die by lethal injection and only the governor of Virginia or the Supreme Court can stop the planned execution on September 23.

However there are growing concerns among Americans that the woman shouldn’t be executed because of her IQ. The woman has such a low IQ that she has been classified as been “borderline mentally ill” person. Teresa has an IQ of 70 and Christian groups and other agencies have taken up the challenge to have the execution halted.

The American Constitution prohibits the execution of mentally retarded persons but with Teresa’s IQ, she is not considered mentally retarded. To be classified as mentally retarded in the United States, the person must have an IQ lower than that of Teresa’s. Teresa’s lawyers don’t see Teresa as any better than mentally retarded arguing that she is too dumb to be executed.
