Mar 11 (Pen Men at Work): A public commemorative service is intended on Sunday for Doris “Granny D” Haddock, the resolute and indefatigable activist dedicated to the reform of campaign finance. She breathed her last breath in New Hampshire a decade after walking from corner to corner of the country at the overripe age of 89. Doris “Granny D” Haddock had campaigned at the mammoth age of 94 as a Democrat aspirant for the U.S. Senate against a well-liked and potent Republican incumbent, Judd Gregg.
In 1999 and 2000, Haddock marched 3,200 miles over 14 months to give her approval to the public financing of campaigns. Four years later, she ran unproductively for the U.S. Senate against Republican Judd Gregg.
In a book about her celebrated walk, Haddock uttered that she sometimes felt imprudent. However, when she imagined about people who questioned her capacity, her rage gave her strength to continue.
Commiserations have rained heavily from both provincial and national officials. Republican Senator Judd Gregg, who trounced Haddock 66-34 percent in 2004, stated that Haddock confirmed the astonishing force one person can contain on the political process.
Gregg articulated that Granny D’s contribution to New Hampshire politics will be remembered unceasingly. Her congenial approach to the Senatorial election laid down a high-quality example for all of us who are occupied in political fights.
Haddock, who turned 100 in January, breathed her last on Tuesday at her home in Dublin due to unceasing respiratory infirmity. She was surrounded by her family. Her son, Jim Haddock, has declared that the service will be conducted at the Dublin Community Church.
