flying Japanese squid Boreham, Dec 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A British photographer has got a rare incident on camera – flying squid.

Photographer Graham Ekins admitted that he was lucky to have captured the spectacle on camera. He captured the creature at the waters near Japan.

The animal which is one of the most illusive uses its fins to propel itself to several feet above the water. In this case, the animal was captured by the 60-year-old photographer.

The creatures use their fins as wings. They use that to keep their balance in the air and at first, they look quite like flying fishes. In fact, Graham who is a retired deputy head teacher revealed that he thought so at first.

When the creatures are not flying, they swim in the shoals and when they are frightened, they leap from the water as a means of defense mechanism.

He took three shots of the spectacle and the picture is one of the rarest in the natural world.

Graham explained that, “There was a group of about 20 flying squid and they sensed danger from the bow wave of the boat and their defense mechanism is to leap out of the water.”
