New Jersey, Apr 16, (THAINDIAN NEWS) April 16th, which happens to be the Day of Silence will be observed by major middle schools and high schools all across the nation. The Day of Silence is observed by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network’s (GLSEN) where all observers shall remain silent in the wake of all harassment and disgrace targeted towards homosexual individuals and their supporters.
Reportedly, more than 6000 schools have gone ahead to register their name as active participants in the event. As the name suggests all students shall remain silent all throughout this day unless they are asked to answer in class. Eliza Byard who happens to be the Executive Director for GLSEN said that Anti LGBT harassment is a pretty common thing witnessed in most American schools. In due protest of the problem, GLSEN observes the day with a vision to render support and make the world a better place to live in for all gay individuals who are threatened in the school because of their orientation. As a matter of fact, 86.2% of LGBT youth in the last year 2009 is said to have been victim of verbal abuse back in their schools. 44.1% of LGBT have been subjected to physical assault which makes this issue a sensitive one.
Day of Silence had its roots way back in the year of 1996 when GLSEN has gone ahead to take the command of the event which focused in assuring all gay individuals a better life, free from all harassment in school. Eliza Byard said that she is proud of the fact that how many major schools all across the nation have come up willingly to support and take the cause further which shall generate public awareness all over.
