Giant Tuna Fetches Record $396K in Tokyo

Jan 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to a report from The Associated Press, a huge blue fin tuna has managed to bring in a record price tag of 32.49 million yen, or almost three hundred and ninety six thousand dollars in US dollars. The fish sold on Wednesday on Tokyo, Japan at the very first auction of this year in the largest wholesale fish market in the world.

The fish weighed in at 754 pounds or 342 kilograms. The previous record was set back in 2001, according to a spokesperson from the market in Tsukiji. That fish from that record weighed 445 pounds and was sold for 20.2 million yen.

Although the fish was huge, officials were still quite surprised by the price which is fetched. The same two owners of the previous record fish, which consisted of the owners of an upscale sushi place located in the Ginza district of Tokya, and the owners of Itamae Sushi, which is a more casual chain based in Hong Kong.

There were five hundred and thirty eight giant tunas shipped in from all over the globe for the auction which was held on Wednesday. It was caught off of the shores of Japan. The price per pound adds up to be around ninety five thousand yen per kilogram, or five hundred and twenty six dollars per pound. It can sell for as much as two thousand yen or twenty four dollars for a piece of blue fin tuna at high end restaurants in tokyo.
