Gettysburg College Senior Charged with MurderApril 10th, 2009 - 8:10 pm ICT by GD
A senior from Gettyburg College, Pa, was charged with criminal homicide after his ex-girlfriend was found stabbed and stangled to death yesterday morning.
At around 7 am, Kevin Robert Schaeffer, 21, of Oley, Berks County was charged with the murder of Emily Rachel Silverstein, 19 of Roosevelt, NJ, in his apartment on the 500 block of Carlisle Street following a 911 call. Shawn Wagner, the Adams County District Attorney declined to make any statement about the motive Kevin may have had for the murder but said “This is a domestic violence related homicide.”
Silverstein was stabbed three times in the neck and torso and Kevin may have choked her with his hands at the two-storey yellow clapboard apartment that the private liberal-arts school leases to its students. An autopsy is to be conducted at the Lehigh Valley
Medical Center on Friday to confirm the exact cause of the death. Janet Morgan Riggs, president of Gettysburg College said, “t really is a very difficult day for us here on campus.” By evening, friends of Silverstein, who was an Anthropology sophomore major had laid out a temporary memorial with candles, two photographs and a flag that said Peace. Couselors have been asked to visit the college to calm down the students and help them deal with the crisis.
The School Chaplain Joseph Donnella and Riggs got together to address the students in the Ballroom of the College Union Building to provide some comfort to the students, many of whom were visible shaken.
Meanwhile Schaeffer has been charged with criminal homicide, aggravated assault, tampering with physical evidence and possessing an instrument of crime and a preliminary hearing is expected within next week. The DA did not explain the tampering with evidence charge.
