German Catholics want to ban Santa Claus
October 7th, 2010 - 9:33 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattBerlin, Oct 7 (THAINDIAN NEWS) To cut down the hype created during Christmas, a group of German Catholics are campaigning to ban Santa Claus.
The group wants to change the image of old Santa Claus with St. Nicholas, because he focuses on kindness and helping gesture than material possessions of the old Santa. They want community to ban the traditional Santa and replace it with a charitable image. On their website the group has posted various posts stating that St Nicholas has an image of a helper.
The group claims that the image helps people who are in need and remind us to help our neighbors and spread peace and the gift of happiness rather than material gifts. The campaign started by German Catholics has gained support from various well-known German celebrities.
The group wants to cease over the expenses made over Christmas on Santa Clause’s name. They insist on spreading love rather expensive gift to your loved ones. It can be observed that from the image of Santa Clause has been modified from a jolly red-suited, white bearded Santa to Thomas Nast’s plump Santa. Santa is a very popular among kids, who hand over their list of wanted Christmas presents to him and then wait for their chosen gifts on Christmas day.
