George Zimmerman accused of sexual abuse
July 17th, 2012 - 6:17 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattColorado, July 17 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A cousin of George Zimmerman has accused the 28-year-old of sexual assault over a decade. The accusations are contained on a tape that prosecutors released to the press.
The defense team tried fruitlessly to block the tape from being released but it was eventually released. Opinions are divided as to whether Zimmerman can be prosecuted for the alleged sexual assault.
The complainant told investigators that Zimmerman started abusing her when she started sleeping in the family home of Zimmerman. Zimmerman, the man at the center of the Trevor Martin scandal, was eight years old when he started the alleged sexual assault. The complainant was six years old at the time.
She told investigators that the assault continued until she was 16 years and Zimmerman was 18 years old.
Observers are still wondering how the sexual assault charges affect the murder case that has been brought against Zimmerman. The prosecution team has released several documents and other recordings including taped phone conversations from Zimmerman while in jail.
It is currently not clear if criminal charges will be brought against Zimmerman on the rape charges. Experts say filing a charge against Zimmerman will depend on where the charge took place because different states have different laws on child abuse.
