July 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to wildlife officials in Florida, an alligator bit off the hand of an 18 year old while he was in the water at a popular swimming area in a canal with friends.

A spokeswoman for the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, Gabriella Ferraro stated that an eighteen year old by the name of Timothy Delano from Naples was recovering at the local hospital after having his left hand bitten off by a gator. Although they officials were able to catch the animal and find the hand inside of it’s stomach, doctors could not re-attach the hand because of contaminants which would have made their way into the boy’s body and posed a danger to his life.

Delano was said to have been swimming with three of his friends at around 9:30 on Sunday night when he was attacked by the gator. The men swam to the shore and drove him to a nearby gas station where they used the phone to call 911. Delano was then airlifted to a nearby hospital.

Swimmers are cautioned to stay out of freshwater canals and lakes during this season, especially during dawn and dusk, because alligators are more active.
