ALBANY, OREGON (BNO NEWS) — A third alarm fire in Oregon on early Sunday destroyed a post of the American Legion, a congressionally chartered mutual-aid veterans organization of the U.S. armed forces.

The Albany Fire Department said firefighters responded to a fire at 1215 Southeast Pacific Boulevard - the location of American Legion Albany Post 10 - at approximately 12.22 a.m. local time. “Upon arrival there were flames showing from the building,” said Wanda Omdahl, deputy fire marshall and a spokeswoman for the Albany Fire Department.

Omdahl said a second alarm was quickly called for and a third alarm was requested at 1.21 a.m. “When the bartender left the American Legion at 10 p.m. there was no one in the building,” she said.

A total of 11 fire department vehicles and approximately 42 firefighters from Albany, Scio, Lebanon, Corvallis, Philomath and Jefferson were called to the scene to battle to intense fire.

American Legion Albany Post 10 is a club that is owned by its 1,800 members and there are about 100 to 150 people that patronize the American Legion during any given week. Omdahl said the club did have insurance.

“The 4th of July is a special time for the American Legion and they had several events planned to celebrate this holiday,” Omdahl said. “The events will most likely have to be canceled.”

No injuries were reported as a result of the fire. The cause is under investigation.
