STATEN ISLAND, NEW YORK (BNO NEWS) – Four individuals were indicted for robbing and assaulting a Mexican immigrant, prosecutors said Friday.

Rodolfo Olmedo, 26, suffered serious physical injury and was robbed of his cell phone and wallet after being repeatedly struck with a wooden stick on April 5 in Staten Island, New York. The four individuals were allegedly yelling anti-Mexican insults against the victim during the assault.

The individuals were identified as Tyrone Goodman, 18, Rolston Hopson, 18, William Marcano, 18, and Ethan Cave, 16, all of Staten Island, New York.

All four were indicted on several charges of robbery, assault, and larceny, and Marcano, in addition, was indicted on charges of criminal possession of a weapon. The Grand Jury declined to indict the conspirators on hate crimes charges related to the incident.

“It should be noted that under sentencing guidelines, the maximum penalty for the top charge, Robbery in the 1st Degree, is the same whether charged as a hate crime or not, with a potential sentence of 25 years in prison,” said District Attorney Daniel M. Donovan, Jr. “The only difference is that if the defendants were indicted under the hate crimes statute the minimum sentence which would be elevated by three years, from a potential five to a minimum of eight years in prison.”

All four indicted individuals are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, April 28 in State Supreme Court.
