Four of the soldiers were killed as a result of improvised explosive device (IED) strikes from insurgents that occurred on Saturday in southern Afghanistan. While it is ISAF policy to not release the nationality of any casualties, the Associated Press reported that the four fatalities were U.S. soldiers.
A fifth soldier succumbed to wounds received in combat last month. The service member passed away on Friday in his home country, with his family and friends present.
“It is with my utmost sorrow that I extend my condolences to the families and friends of these valorous soldiers who fell to advance the cause of Afghanistan. Their dedication and bravery will be remembered,” said Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, a spokesman for the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF). “The ISAF forces have a clear mission - to help the Afghan National Security Forces establish security so to allow governance and reconstruction to take place in Afghanistan,” Tremblay added.
