Four NATO-led troops die in Afghanistan
August 11th, 2009 - 7:28 pm ICT by adminKABUL (BNO NEWS) – Four NATO-led ISAF service members have died in Afghanistan in four separate incidents, the alliance said in a statement on Tuesday.
One of the service members died from wounds suffered in incident that occurred on August 8. Another died on August 9 and a third individual died on August 10. The fourth soldier was killed as a result of an insurgent attack in eastern Afghanistan on Monday.
The three soldiers who died on August 8, 9 and 10, died from separate hostile fire incidents in southern Afghanistan, ISAF said. The alliance did not provide further details on the incidents.
“These brave servicemen did their best to improve the life conditions of ordinary Afghans. We owe them and their loved ones who grieve their loss our deepest gratitude,” said Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, a spokesman for ISAF.
“Our forces work hard alongside their Afghan security partners to extend security throughout the country to allow the local population to enjoy a normal life and take part in the forthcoming elections free from insurgent intimidation and violence,” he added.
A U.S. spokesperson, Captain Elizabeth Mathias, confirmed the three service members were from the United States.
In another incident, on late Monday, ISAF and Afghan security forces received small arms fire from multiple insurgents. The patrol responded to the attack but a service member died in the engagement. His or her nationality was not immediately released, but next of kin has been informed.
“My most sincere condolences go out to the families and friends of the ISAF soldier,” Tremblay said. “Protecting the civilian population from insurgent tyranny is tough and difficult in certain parts of Afghanistan, but 42 nations are committed to this mission and we will accomplish it with resolve,” he added.
The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) is a key component of the international community’s engagement in Afghanistan, assisting the Afghan authorities in providing security and stability and creating the conditions for reconstruction and development.
