It crashed on the center media of Interstate 70 near mile marker 37, which is near the Washington County and Frederick County line. The aircraft went down and caught fire after it hit some power lines at around 10.25 p.m. local time. All four people on board were killed in the crash, according to Jim Peters, who is a spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration.
Emergency services were dispatched after a Maryland State Trooper, driving eastbound, came upon the scene of a helicopter that had just crashed.
The helicopter was owned and operated by Marsan Aviation, Inc, which is a company located in Wilmington, Delaware. Official records showed the certificate for the aircraft was issued on March 12, 2007 and was still valid when it crashed. Peters said it was a Robinson R44, which has four seats.
No one on the ground was injured. The Maryland State Police, the National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are on scene and will investigate the cause of the crash.
The highway was still closed in both directions between Md. 66 (Exit 35) and Md. 17 (Exit 42) as of early Friday morning. Power lines are down across the road. Eastbound I-70 traffic is being directed off at US 40 (exit 32), where it will remain on US 40 to either Myersville or Frederick to return to I-70. Westbound I-70 traffic is being directed off at MD 17 (Exit 42-Myersville), then onto westbound US 40 and back onto I-70 at Exit 32 (Dual Highway-Hagerstown).
