Fort Hood, Nov 6 (THAINDIAN NEWS) An Army psychiatrist Nidal Malik Hasan who shot and killed 12 people and wounded 31 in a shooting spree at a sprawling military post north of Austin on Thursday afternoon, is said to be in a critical condition but is not dead as yet. He was firing indiscriminately with his 2 handguns. To control the shooting spree, local police fired at him and injured him. A civilian policewoman, who was injured in the exchange, police said, wounded him.
“His death is not imminent,” Lt. Gen. Bob Cone at Fort Hood said late Thursday evening. There were reports that the police had killed him but they are not true.
He was due to be posted in Iraq, but he was not ready to be deployed there. On top of this, he thought that he was also facing discrimination for being a Muslim. All these could have sown the seeds of frustration in him.
Maj. Malik Nadal Hasan started behaving suspiciously when he posted messages lauding the suicide bombers and called them Jehadis, as he felt that calling them ‘suicide bombers’ was derogatory in nature. He was also a member of the ‘Center for the Study of Traumatic Stress’. It is really ironical that he fell a prey to this same stress and took out his angst in the form of this tragic shooting spree.
