MCALLEN, TEXAS (BNO NEWS) – A Texas ex-bank teller was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison Friday morning for stealing, U.S. Attorney Tim Johnson said.

Alan Gomez, 23, of McAllen, Texas was a bank teller with First National Bank and pleaded guilty to embezzlement on April 1, 2009, admitting to have used his position to steal roughly $40,000 in bank funds over a two-month period.

At the beginning of the business day, Gomez used to steal differing amounts of money from his cash drawer and then process illegitimate cash-out transactions on the amount he stole, meaning the balance on his teller computer corresponded with the amount of money in his drawer. Nonetheless, Gomez would delete the transactions at the end of the day, masking the information from First National Bank’s overnight auditors.

After serving his 18-month prison term, Gomez will have a five-year-term of supervised release and was ordered to pay $30,795.84 in restitution to First National Bank.

Investigations by the U.S. Secret Service uncovered his scheme, and Assistant United States Attorney Gregory S. Saikin prosecuted the case.
