KANSAS CITY, KANSAS (BNO NEWS) – A former church music director of Kansas City, Missouri, was sentenced to 150 months, more than 15 years, in federal prison for one count of arson and one count of attempted mail fraud, prosecutors announced on Wednesday.

Carva Lee White, 46, was arrested for setting fire to the Sunflower Missionary Baptist Church in Leavenworth, Kansas, on October 31, 2008. One week before the arson, White told the church’s pastor that he planned to set on fire the building for executing a fraud scheme.

White planned to collect kickbacks from contractors who will inflate the prices for the repairs. The church’s insurance would pay for the contractor’s work.

The evening of the arson, the Leavenworth Fire Department responded a call about the church being consumed by fire. The managed to control it and further investigation determined that it wasn’t an accidental fire.

Church Mutual Insurance Co. issued a $103,236 check for the repairs at the Sunflower church. At his sentence hearing, White was also ordered to pay $1,000 in restitution to the Baptist church and $374,993 to the insurance company.
