BUENOS AIRES (BNO NEWS) — Former Argentine President Nestor Kirchner was rushed to a Buenos Aires hospital on Sunday, a medical official said. He is undergoing an emergency surgery on one of his carotid arteries.

Kirchner, a national lawmaker, husband and top adviser of current President Cristina Fernandez, had damage to the right carotid artery, the Presidential Medic Unit said.

The surgery is proceeding normally and the condition of the former President is not considered to be serious, local media reported.

President Fernandez arrived at the Arcos hospital on Sunday afternoon where Kirchner is undergoing the emergency procedure.

Nestor Kirchner led Argentina from 2003 to 2007 and is currently under heavy criticism because he bought $2 million in October 2008, just few weeks before the start of the global financial crisis.

Opposition lawmakers say he may have been benefited from inside information. Kirchner is expected to again run for president in 2011.
