MIAMI (BNO NEWS) — Forecasters on Friday said a tropical depression may soon form off the African coast in the far eastern Atlantic Ocean.

Forecasters at the Miami-based U.S. National Hurricane Center have been tracking the storm since early Thursday afternoon. Since then, it has become more organized and may soon develop into a tropical depression.

“A vigorous tropical wave accompanied by a broad low pressure system is centered about 210 miles (337.9 kilometers) south-southeast of the southernmost Cape Verde Islands,” said forecaster Stewart. “Although shower and thunderstorm activity has changed little overnight, environmental conditions remain favorable for some development of this system, and a tropical depression could form during the next couple of days.”

Stewart said there appeared to be a 70 percent chance of the system becoming a tropical depression by Sunday.
