Washington DC, Aug 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) According to reports, nearly 41 million Americans availed of food stamps in the month of May, and this is a record all right. The main reason for this record is that the jobless rate is also at a 27-year high.

According to a statement by the US Department of Agriculture on their website, the number of American citizens who availed of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program subsidies for food rose over 19% compared to the figures in 2009. And the other sad part is that this number again increased by almost a percent (0.9 % to be exact) when compared to the figures for April 2010.

The White House officials have said that around 40.5 million people are going to be given food stamps each and every month, for the year, which started on the 1st of October. And this is quite a worrying figure, as 40.5 million people constitute around one-eight of the population. There are also reports that a record number of families belonging to Illinois are availing of the food stamp facility. There are estimated to be 780,000 Illinois families who got the food stamps in June.

But perhaps it seems like the worst is yet to come, because projections show that the people who would receive food stamps in 2011 are going to amount to 43.3 million.
