Florida Marine dies in vehicle accident in southern Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — A U.S. service member who died as a result of a vehicle accident in southern Afghanistan on Sunday was identified as a Marine from Florida on Tuesday.

The 2nd Marine Division said Cpl. Jonathan D. Porto, 26, died in a non-combat related incident in Afghanistan’s Helmand province. Porto, who is of Largo, Florida, was assigned to the 1st Battalion 6th Marine Regiment, 2nd Marine Division, II Marine Expeditionary Force in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

The NATO-led ISAF alliance said Porto died as a result of a vehicle accident, but provided no further details.

Porto was a small arms repair technician assigned to 1st Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment, Regimental Combat Team 7, Marine Expeditionary Brigade-Afghanistan. He joined the Marine Corps in March 2008 and was promoted to the rank of corporal on December 1, 2009.

He deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom in December 2009. His awards include the Afghanistan Campaign Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and NATO International Security Assistance Force Medal.

He is survived by his wife.

A total of 113 service members have been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, most of whom were from the United States and the United Kingdom. Porto was the 71st U.S. service member killed in Afghanistan this year.

Also on Tuesday, a British soldier died as a result of wounds sustained in an explosion which occurred in the Musa Qalah District of Helmand Province on February 21.
