Washington, Sep 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton has criticized the proposal of a Florida based church to burn copies of the Islamic holy book Qur’an in a bonfire on September 11, on the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The evangelical church Dove World Outreach Center had put forward the proposal to torch copies of the holy book with the aim of commemorating the victims of the 9/11 attacks on what is being referred to as the ‘International Burn a Qur’an Day.”
While talking to the media about the controversial initiative of the Dove World Outreach Center, Hillary Clinton described the proposal as a “disrespectful, disgraceful act” while adding that she was heartened by the condemnation that the act has been facing from the religious leaders of United States hailing from different faiths as well as the political leaders of the nation. The statements made by the Secretary of State against the initiative of the Florida based church holds special significance as she made it during the iftar meal that was organized in State Department to commemorate the Muslim holy month of Ramadan.
However, Hillary Clinton is not the only leader in the Obama administration who has condemned the venture by the Dove World Outreach Center. Attorney General Eric Holder has also slammed the Florida church’s proposal describing it as idiotic and dangerous while a spokesperson of the state department has called it “un-American.” Meanwhile, Pastor Terry Jones of the Dove World Outreach Church has invited all Americans to participate in the burning of Qur’an with the aim of paying tribute to the victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
