Phnom Penh, Cambodia, Mar 11, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The government in Cambodia has declared that the historical site of the Khmer Rouge is going to be preserved, and it is going to be turned into a tourist spot. Located at Anlong Veng, the site houses the final shelters of the Khmer Rouge. This had become the last place where the guerrillas of the Khmer Rouge regime had taken shelter in after their government was overthrown in 1979. According to reports given by government officials, the step is going to involve the preservation of 14 of these sites. The Cabinet at Cambodia gave its approval to the measure last week.
The government has declared that they would be taking the necessary steps to ensure that the bastions of the Khmer Rouge on the Anlong Veng region are not destroyed or harmed in any way, either by the local people, or because of people residing illegally. The 14 sites of the Khmer Rouge that are being protected by the Cambodian government include homes of the leaders of the militant group as well as the grave of their most notorious leader, Pol Pot. Besides, the site is also the location of a warehouse where they stored their ammunition.
The declaration has been made by Yim Phana, a provincial Governor. The idea of turning the Khmer Rouge bastions into a tourist spot is not going to be very difficult. Although at one point of time Anlong Veng had been a village in one of the remotest parts of the country, at present it is developed, and well connected with the rest of the country. Moreover, it is also connected by road and rail to the Angkor Vat.
