Filipinos celebrate ‘Year of Rabbit’ with golden cakes

Manila, Feb 2 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Chinese-Filipinos are doing everything possible to attract good luck in the coming Lunar New Year.

They plan to celebrate the Lunar New Year with rabbit-shaped rice cakes that are decorated with gold and diamonds. Many believe that by having the expensive piece, they will be attracting good luck in the New Year. The Year of the Rabbit is being sold between $500 and $2,700 apiece. The sweets are covered with 24-carat gold and small diamonds. It is wondered how average Chinese-Filipinos can afford the cakes.

The person who invented the cake, Angelito Araneta Jr. told journalists that the rice cake can attract good luck in the New Year. He also said that the glutinous rice cakes bring the needed luck to secure and maintain good family and friend ties in the upcoming year.

The lunar New Year will fall on Thursday the 3rd day of February this year. It is a custom to share glutinous rice cakes with friends and the family on such an important day. The Lunar New Year is the most important date on the calendar of the Chinese people.

The Year of the Rabbit Golden Cakes are currently being bought by the rich in the society.
