Fifth of November is Guy Fawkes Night

November 5th, 2009 - 9:25 pm ICT by Aishwarya Bhatt Tell a Friend -

London, Nov 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Fifth of November is celebrated as Guy Fawkes Night. It is an annual celebration in the twilight of 5 November, as it marks the downfall of the Gunpowder Plot of 5 November 1605, in which a number of Catholic conspirators, which included the local hero Guy Fawkes, tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament, in London, United Kingdom.

In England, the fifth of November night is a major celebration time. The celebrations and the festivities take place in towns and villages all across the country. The celebrations majorly include fireworks displays and the building of bonfires on which traditionally effigies of Guy Fawkes are burnt, although this practice is not always observed in modern times.

Burning of these effigies is not a normal practice, as there exist some schools of thought who do not follow this practice whereas the others do so with gusto.

There are various songs, which are associated with this day. Like the following, Remember, remember the Fifth of November,
The Gunpowder Treason and Plot,
I know of* no reason
Why the Gunpowder Treason
Should ever be forgot.
Guy Fawkes, Guy Fawkes, t’was his intent
To blow up the King and Parli’ment.
Three-score barrels of powder below
To prove old England’s overthrow;
By God’s providence he was catch’d (or by God’s mercy*)
With a dark lantern and burning match.
Holloa boys, holloa boys, let the bells ring. (Holla*)
Holloa boys, holloa boys, God save the King!
