HAVANA, CUBA (BNO NEWS) — Fidel Castro on Monday will be appearing live on public television for the first time in years, state media said.

Castro, 83, will be hosting a special discussion panel at 6:30 p.m., local time, to evaluate “dangerous activities” that currently surround the Middle East, state press said.

The interview will be broadcasted through practically all of Cuba, including Cubavision, Cubavision Internacional, Radio Rebelde, and Radio Habana Cuba, Granma, the official newspaper of the Central Committee of the Cuban Communist Party, said.

The last time Fidel Castro, who stepped away from his leading government post four years ago in July 2006, appeared on television was eleven months ago when a prerecorded interview was broadcasted.

In 2007, Castro also appeared on television through a prerecorded discussion panel in June and September.

Fidel’s televised appearance comes at a time when worldwide media has been focusing on Guillermo FariƱas’ 135 day hunger strike that pressured the Cuban government to release 52 political prisoners.

Since retiring and leaving his post to his brother Raul Castro after 48 years of governance, Fidel Castro has been writing a column for the press called “Reflexions of your comrade Fidel.”

Despite being retired, Fidel Castro continues to have enormous say in politics, and is currently the secretary of the Communist Party of Cuba, which is the highest ranking position within the political organization.
