June 15, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The FBI files, released on Monday, have disclosed that late Senator Edward Kennedy or Ted Kennedy faced numerous death threats following the assassination of his brothers. In fact, he had also faced the death threats before the death of his brothers. It also divulged the attempts by the Kennedy family to quell the rumors that he had links with the Communists.
Kennedy passed away in 2009 at the age of 77, and was suffering from brain cancer. The FBI archives on Kennedy consist of 2,200 pages. The disclosed details include the extortion schemes and threats against the senator mainly.
The Massachusetts Senator worked for 47 years. He was one of the liberal champions in the Senate, who focused on the civil rights and health care. Kennedy carried forward the political heritage of his slain brothers.
Ted Kennedy also faced some nonpolitical threats, which were from radical group members like the National Socialist White People’s Party, the Ku Klux Klan and the ‘Minutemen’ organizations.
In his personal record, the senator had expressed his fear of being murdered following the killing of his brothers. His brother President John F. Kennedy Jr. was assassinated in 1963 and the other brother Senator Robert Kennedy Jr. was killed in 1968.
A federal prisoner in Soledad, California, has alleged that Sirhan Sirhan, Robert Kennedy’s killer tried to appoint him for murdering Kennedy upon release.
The document dated Nov 29, 1977 stated, “The subject offered him a car and one million dollars in return for killing the senator but he declined the contract.”
