Connecticut power plant blast MIDDLETOWN, CONNECTICUT (BNO NEWS) — A large explosion at a power plant in Middletown, Connecticut killed at least five people on Sunday, officials said. Below is a fact sheet of the confirmed information as of 6.30 p.m. EST.

LOCATION - The incident took place at the Kleen Energy Plant on River Road in Middletown, Connecticut. - The Kleen Energy Plant is located along the Connecticut River, about 16 miles south of Hartford. - Middletown is a city located in Middlesex County in the U.S. state of Connecticut.

WHAT & WHEN - The Kleen Energy Plant is an under construction 620 megawatt gas-fired power plant. It was not fully operational on Sunday. - The explosion, which was described as “large”, happened at 11.26 a.m. EST. - Tests were being conducted at the time of the incident, and crews were conducting gas blows - a practice used to clean pipelines. - Multiple contractors were on the site, adding to the confusion on the number of employees actually working at the time of the accident. About 50 people are believed to have been on scene. - Reports from local, state and regional agencies indicate there is no health risk to the public.

CASUALTIES - At least five people have been confirmed dead. - Names of the fatalities have not been released as the families of victims have not yet been informed. - At least 12 people have been confirmed injured. - Eleven of the injured were transported to Middlesex Hospital. Two of them were sent home with minor injuries, while one person was transported to Hartford Hospital with extensive injuries. The conditions of the eight other injured was not immediately known. - Two people were transported to Hartford Hospital, including the patient which was initially taken to Middlesex Hospital. - It is not yet known if anyone remains missing. An Urban Search and Rescue Team is on the scene with dogs to attempt to locate other victims, if any. - Local media initially reported that up to fifty people had been killed and 250 injured, but officials denied that.

EMERGENCY RESPONSE - Multiple police departments assisted in the initial hours following the explosion. - Approximately five to seven fire units are still on the scene as of 6 p.m. EST. - The Capital Incident Regional Management - District 3 is on scene. - The Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT) - Middletown and Manager are on scene. - The Red Cross has set up a family and victim crisis intervention site at the Middletown City Hall, located at 245 DeKoven Drive. - The Red Cross has set up a family information hotline number, which can be reached at (860) 347-2577.

STATE LEVEL RESPONSE - Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell is on scene of the explosion. - Governor Rell has activated the Emergency Operations Center in Hartford which is being staffed by the state Department of Emergency Management, Homeland Security (DEMHS), the Department of Public Health (DPH), the National Guard and the Connecticut State Police.

PROBABLE CAUSE - The explosion is believed to have been a gas explosion. - Terrorism has been ruled out.
