etaSep 5, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Basque militant group called ETA announced in a video statement on Sunday that it has stopped carrying out armed attacks. The ceasefire comes as an effort by the group to turn their cause for independence into a political process. The video, which was broadcast by one of the leading news networks, showed three masked men making the statement in Basque. The statement said that the group has stopped carrying out armed attacks and is now looking forward to a more democratic process to gain freedom from the Spanish government.

Some experts feel that the ETA has been weakened over the last six months due to the large number of arrests of the militants. Spain’s interior ministry has claimed that as many as 62 arrests from the ETA have been made across Europe recently. The suspected military leader of ETA, known as Ata was also arrested in May this year. The Spanish prime minister on the other hand has reiterated recently that the Spanish government will not negotiate any pact with ETA.

Over the years the ETA has been responsible for over 850 deaths throughout Europe. They use car bombs and shooting to kill the innocent and have been branded as a terrorist organization by the United States and the European Union. The Spanish government is yet to react to the recent statement by the ETA. Earlier, in March 2006, ETA had announced a ‘permanent cease fire’ but followed it up in Dec with a powerful bomb explosion in Madrid Airport killing two people. This prompted the government to state that it will not negotiate with the group in the future.
