August 24th, 2009 - 7:32 pm ICT by BNO NewsKABUL (BNO NEWS) — Two Estonian soldiers were killed in southern Afghanistan on Sunday, officials told BNO News on Monday.
The soldiers died as a result of an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) detonation that occurred during a patrol in southern Afghanistan, according to a spokeswoman for the NATO-led ISAF alliance.
The spokeswoman, as well as the Estonian Ministry of Defence, confirmed that the fallen soldiers were from Estonia. The country’s Defence Ministry named the soldiers as Eerik Salmus and Raivis Kang, both 26 years old.
“All of ISAF grieves for the tragic loss of these hard-working service members and our most sincere sympathies go out to their families, friends and comrades,” said Brigadier-General Eric Tremblay, a spokesman for ISAF. “Despite these tough losses, we will continue our mission with resolve and concentrate our activities on protecting the Afghan population and removing the insurgent threat from their daily lives.”
