PINELLAS PARK, FLORIDA (BNO NEWS) — An elderly pedestrian was killed on early Sunday when he was struck by an SUV as he crossed a street in Pinallas Park, Florida, police said.

The accident happened just before 12.45 a.m. local time at Park Boulevard and 52nd Street. The pedestrian, a 67-year-old male, suffered life threatening injuries and was transported to Northside Hospital. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“The pedestrian appeared to be crossing Park Boulevard, west of the actual intersection, when he was struck,” said Lieutenant Paul Andrews, a spokesman for the Pinellas Park Police Department. Andrews said he was struck by a Silver 2003 Ford Escape driven by Joanne Luce, 29, of St. Petersburg. “Mrs. Luce was not injured in the crash and she pulled her SUV into a nearby parking lot immediately after the crash,” Andrews said.

Witnesses called 911 and attempted to render aid to the pedestrian until emergency personnel arrived on the scene. The victim was identified as 67-year-old Ronald Paul Segars of St. Petersburg.

Portions of the roadway were closed while traffic homicide investigators investigated the accident, but those have since re-opened. “The investigators will determine the appropriateness of any enforcement action at the completion of their investigation,” Andrews said.
