Eight hurt after brawl at Washington, D.C. metro stations
August 8th, 2010 - 12:19 am ICT by BNO NewsWASHINGTON, D.C. (BNO NEWS) — Eight people were injured on late Friday evening after two related incidents at two metro stations in Washington, D.C., authorities said.
The first incident happened around 11.15 p.m. EDT at L’Enfant Plaza metro station in the Southwest Federal Center neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Authorities initially said it involved a shooting, but later said it was a large brawl.
“As units arrived on the scene they found there was actually an assault in progress,” said Pete Piring, a spokesman for D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services. He said as many as a dozen people may have been involved in the brawl.
Piring said a mass casualty unit was called for as police tried to get control of the scene. “Eventually we had seven patients. Four were transported, they were in a range from 13 to 18,” he added. None of the injuries were serious.
The injured who were not transported to a medical facility were taken into custody by police, Piring said.
Another incident was reported around the same time at Anacostia Metro station in southeast D.C. Piring said the incident was first reported as a shooting, but it turned out no gunshots had been fired.
“It was not a shooting but possibly an injury, maybe a stabbing of some sort associated to this activity at L’Enfant,” he said.
Police are investigating both incidents.
